About the Photographer PDF Print E-mail

Paul RussellPaul is an accomplished videographer, stills photographer and digital retoucher whose work has been published in almost every media in every major market. He regularly shoots stock for Corbis (the largest stock agency in the world) and takes on interesting assignments that cover photojournalism, portraits, corporate and architectural studies. .

In 2009 Paul was chosen as the primary photographer to create a large photo library for Air Mauritius. Over a two week period in February 2010? he worked with over 20 models and hundreds of staff and the local population to create hundreds of images which will be part of Air Mauritius' publicity for many years.

Using only the latest, top of the range Canon cameras and lenses, Paul brings an unusual eye to every subject, yet still maintains his sense of proportion and balance.

An experienced retoucher, Paul also spends many hours making individual shots stand out. Over the last couple of years he has also been working in the field of High Dynamic Resolution Photography, which requires extensive technical knowledge of the way computers process visual images. The results can vary from absolutely stunning to an almost 'painting-like' texture that adds a surreal layer to any image.

Equipment

Paul shoots exclusively on the Canon EOS 1 DS MKIII and EOS 5D MKII, which both give a 21 megapixel image, currently the highest definition of any professional SLR camera. He uses the Canon L range of lenses, preferred by professional photographers all over the world. For Video work he also has a set of Mamiya prime lenses which give a very filmic look.

21 Megapixels sounds like a lot, but with good fractal algorithm software these images can be extrapolated to be even larger, offering pin sharp images of 42 Megapixels and above.

The 5D also shoots beautiful HD video, and we'll be adding a showreel to this site soon.

On the IT side, Paul's main workstation is a Dual Xeon machine (that's eight processors) with 16GB of RAM, running Windows 7. Both of his 21" 1650x1080 monitors are calibrated for colour accuracy every week.

Software includes Adobe Master Collection CS5 and a fine collection of proprietary sharpening, blurring, enhancing and colouring plugins for picture retouching. All this fast machinery and expensive software mean excellent results, fast.
